Prestwick House Introduces the Most Effective Roots-Based Vocabulary Program for Grades 4-6!

Smyrna, DE, 16 January 2009 – This month, Prestwick House releases its highly-anticipated new vocabulary series, Growing Your Vocabulary: Learning from Latin and Greek Roots. Created especially for students in grades 4 through 6, this innovative, root-based program gives students the skills they need to do well on state mandated standardized tests.

“Not only will students improve their test scores and vocabulary, but they will also become better readers and communicators by using this series,” says Senior Editor, Paul Moliken. “What makes this program stand out is an approach that is uniquely tailored to upper elementary and middle school students. Although it is based on our best-selling Vocabulary from Latin and Greek Roots series, GYV, in addition to its proven approach toward learning new words, takes a more fun approach that includes games, engaging activities, and lots of artwork that will help students remember what they’ve learned.”

With over half a million vocabulary books in schools nationwide, Prestwick House has been well-known for years by high school teachers as the #1 source for great vocabulary programs. Vocabulary from Latin and Greek Roots, one of Prestwick House’s most popular programs at the high school level, has sold over 175,000 copies since its publication in 2003.

While the best, most effective way students retain vocabulary, according to many sources, is through copious independent reading, most will agree that this is not the optimal choice for a classroom setting. Both tedious to grade and difficult to monitor student progress, many feel the best choice for classroom use tends to be root-based vocabulary study.

“If you’re going to do direct vocabulary instruction in your classroom, the only effective way is through word attack skills like knowing roots and prefixes and suffixes,” says Douglas Grudzina, former teacher and current Prestwick House employee.

“There is no evidence to suggest that memorizing ten words for Friday’s test does anything more than prepare the kid for Friday’s test! Give a man a fish, give a kid a word…you get the idea.”
