Prestwick House Develops Breakthrough
Vocabulary Program to Help Struggling Students
Prestwick House’s New Standards-Based
Vocabulary Program takes a different approach to helping students learn
Smyrna, DE, September 16, 2009 — This week, Prestwick House will unveil a new vocabulary
program created especially for students in grades 7 through 10 who have
difficultly learning vocabulary.
“While
the basic principles of word acquisition are the same for all students, many
require a bit more help to tackle the demands of state testing,” says General
Manager, Keith Bergstrom. “This program will help students not only meet state
standards, but ultimately acquire the tools
they need to learn and understand new words throughout their lives.”
Through
months of rigorous study of dozens of state standards, Prestwick House has
found that a skills-based vocabulary program provides numerous benefits to
enhance student learning, over and above other approaches. In the course of a
four year program such as Standards-Based Vocabulary, the alignment of
state standards and vocabulary practices can result in a measurable impact on
student achievement.
“Standards-Based
Vocabulary is highly focused on making sure that students are not just
memorizing words from week to week,” says senior editor, Paul Moliken. “What
we’ve really tried to do through use of state standards is to provide a framework which ensures students are
expanding the vocabularies they need to
excel—not only on a weekly test, but throughout their lives.”
Although Standards-Based
Vocabulary includes the tried and true approaches, such as discerning word
meanings through context and recognizing roots and affixes, there are
innovative additions like recalling the literary, historical, and mythological
origins of words, techniques that make this program unique.
Senior
editor Paul Moliken says, “As far as vocabulary programs go, Standards-Based Vocabulary is easy for
teachers to use and will get struggling students back on the right track to
understanding vocabulary and enjoying what they read which is every teacher’s
ultimate goal.”
