PRESTWICK HOUSE WINS FOUR AWARDS AT 2008 EDUCATIONAL PUBLISHING SUMMIT

Delaware-Based Educational Publishing Company Honored for Third Year Running

Smyrna DE, June 23, 2008 – This month, Prestwick House was named winner of the Distinguished Achievement Award at AEP’s annual Educational Publishing Summit in Washington, DC, for the third year running. Nominated for four awards in March, Delaware’s leading educational publisher won the DAA in all four categories.

“These prestigious awards grant the recipients not just the satisfaction of work deemed in highest regard by experts in the field,” says AEP representative Stacey Pusey, “but the right to display the trusted Lamp of Learning logo, a ‘seal of approval’ that notifies customers and clients that excellence has been discovered, rewarded, and announced.”

Prestwick House, the leading publisher of educational materials in the state of Delaware, has been developing products for English teachers for the last twenty-five years. “We are very proud of the books we publish,” says Prestwick House General Manager, Keith Bergstrom. “Helping teachers by providing well-made, comprehensive teaching materials that engage students and aid in learning is the reason we exist. Being recognized by the AEP lets us know that our books meet our goal of being immediately useful for teachers in the classroom.”

This is the third consecutive year that Prestwick House products have received awards at the AEP summit. The items recognized this year include the SAT Words for Literature: The Scarlet Letter; Standards of Excellence: FCAT; the Writing Rules of the Road poster and book set; and Rhetorical Devices: A Handbook for Student Writers.

SAT Words from Literature is a series of classic novels in which vocabulary likely to be found on the SAT and other standardized tests is highlighted and defined on the facing page of the text of the novel. The books also contain exercises to help make sure students retain the words they’re learning. There are currently six popular books in the series including Frankenstein, Heart of Darkness, and Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.

Standards of Excellence is a new test prep program that goes beyond test-taking skills to actually providing sound instruction based on the guidelines of the test in addition to state standards. The first two books of the series are keyed toward specific states; California’s CAHSEE exam and Florida’s FCAT are currently available.

Writing Rules of the Road is a poster and book set that employs mnemonic techniques, which help students remember how to avoid the most common writing mistakes, and then how to correct them. The posters address eight of the most common grammar and writing problems with concise explanations of the problems and directions on how to fix them.

Rhetorical Devices is a practical writing handbook, especially well suited for the AP English Language classroom. “There aren’t many programs available that teach advanced language-usage skills in high school,” said Bergstrom. “We’re excited that others are recognizing how important these advanced skills are and how effective Rhetorical Devices is in teaching it.”
