F. Scott Fitzgerald was a prolific writer who is known for portraying the Jazz Age. He was born in 1896 and named after his cousin Francis Scott Key, author of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” In many ways, the decadence and idealism portrayed in Fitzgerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby reflects his own story—a rags-to-riches American Dream rooted in both triumph and ruin. He reaped the rewards of fame and fortune, but his extravagant lifestyle eventually took its toll.
