All Quiet on the Western Front

In this adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s landmark work, award-winning German director Edward Berger presents an unflinching portrayal of the shock and brutality of war. Surprisingly, this is the first German-language film adaptation of the novel. All Quiet on the Western Front premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2022, with critics praising the movie’s haunting visuals. It’s now available to stream on Netflix, but be warned, the battle sequences are intense.
Death on the Nile

Earlier this year, fans of Agatha Christie saw another one of her famous mysteries on the big screen, thanks to British actor and director Sir Kenneth Branagh. His adaptation of Death on the Nile serves as a sequel to his 2017 film, Murder on the Orient Express. In this film, Belgian detective Hercule Poirot must solve a murder aboard a luxurious cruise ship, the S. S. Karnak, as it travels through Egypt. Death on the Nile’s large cast includes Gal Gadot, Tom Bateman, Ali Fazal, Russell Brand, and Letitia Wright.

Octavia E. Butler’s renowned novel comes to life in this upcoming eight-episode television series by FX Productions. A young woman named Dana (played by Mallori Johnson) finds herself traveling through time between present day Los Angeles and pre-Civil War Maryland. In both eras, she tries to uncover secrets about her family’s history. Kindred is set to premiere on Hulu on December 13, 2022.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

Highly anticipated by The Lord of the Rings fans, this television series produced by Amazon Studios expands upon the lore of J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth universe. Drawing from appendices found within the original novel, The Rings of Power dives into the events preceding The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, such as the rise of Sauron and the fall of the Númenórean kingdom. The first season is now available to stream in its entirety, and audiences can look forward to the second installment next year.
A Man Called Otto

Tom Hanks stars as the titular character in this American film adaptation of Swedish author Fredrik Backman’s bestselling novel A Man Called Ove. Although this version will take place in the United States instead of Sweden, its premise remains similar to the original work: A grumpy old man set on ending his life begins to find new purpose after getting to know his community. At the time of this blog post's publication, A Man Called Otto is scheduled to premiere in select theaters on December 25, with a general release on January 13, 2023.
My Father’s Dragon

First published in 1948, Ruth Stiles Gannett's My Father's Dragon is a children's literature classic and a Newbery Honor winner. Together with its sequels, Elmer and the Dragon and The Dragons of Blueland, the story follows a boy named Elmer and his adventures on Wild Island. Netflix is set to release an animated film based on the book trilogy this month. My Father's Dragon will be produced by Cartoon Saloon, the Irish animation company behind the highly acclaimed films Song of the Sea and The Secret of Kells.
Persuasion

Based on Jane Austen’s 1817 novel of the same name, Persuasion is a Netflix film released in July of this year. Starring Dakota Johnson and Cosmo Jarvis, this movie tells the story of Anne Elliot, an unmarried young woman who reconnects with Frederick Wentworth, a naval commander and her former fiancé. The film received mixed reviews, with some praising Johnson’s performance but finding fault in the movie’s modernization of the original material.
Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical

The School for Good and Evil

Directed by Paul Feig, The School for Good and Evil follows the story of Sophie and Agatha, two girls who are whisked away to a magical school in which its students are trained to become heroes or villains. The film’s star-studded cast includes Laurence Fishburne, Michelle Yeoh, Kerry Washington, Charlize Theron, and Cate Blanchett. Breakout actresses Sofia Wylie and Sophia Anne Caruso play the roles of Agatha and Sophie respectively.
The Tragedy of Macbeth

The Tragedy of Macbeth is now available to stream on Apple TV+.
