For nearly 75 years, J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye has influenced generations of students, thanks in part to its remarkable protagonist, Holden Caulfield. After being expelled from yet another prep school, Holden escapes to Manhattan for a few aimless days before he must face his family and break the bad news. As he drifts through the city, he tries—and fails—to prove he’s more genuine and self-aware than the “phonies” he claims to despise.
